The corporate headquarters of the Fouta Corporation situated in Vai Town was yesterday gutted by fire, an incident which impeded the free flow of vehicular traffic and the movement of pedestrians in the vicinity to a standstill for hours. The top floor of the Fouta Corporation’s headquarters was in raging flames when our reporter got on the scene as firefighters from the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) were seen frantically trying to extinguish the fire.
Efforts to get a word from one Mr. Barrie who is said to be the head of the Corporation proved futile as he was surrounded by a number of Fula Businessmen who had gone to the scene to get a first glance of the incident that led to the loss of thousands of dollars worth of properties and other assorted edible goods.
Being a Corporation involved in the importation and marketing of a lot of consumable goods including Liberia’s staple food, rice, the Corporation may have lost immensely.
However officers of the LNFS who spoke to the INQUIRER yesterday at the Corporation’s burnt offices noted that they are investigating the cause of the fire incident and noted that it will take some time to really establish the cause of the fire.
However an eye witness told the INQUIRER that at about 1 p.m. yesterday, the man who operates the generator for the company went out to turn on the generator and upon switching it on, he instantly heard a big sound or a spark which immediately emitted out fire from the generator.
The eye witness said there was no Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) supply current in the building at the time but the generator immediately produced fire which later started to spread to other parts of the top floor of the building.
As the fire spread further, the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) was called in to bring the situation under control but it took about five hours to calm the situation. The LNFS said the fire was so severe and its investigators have begun investigation into the incident.
Although the result of the investigation is not yet known, sources closed to the LNFS said the fire only damaged propertied and some major office documents and equipment but there has not been any human casualty as a result of the fire incident.
The burnt building is one that was recently constructed as the Fouta Corporation’s corporate headquarters and the public is of the view that the investigation must speedily come to a conclusion at which time the exact cause will be known.
