Legislature Passes Budget…Education Left In The Cold

The House of Representatives has passed into law the 2015-2016 Fiscal Budget excluding the operational budget of the Ministry of Education.

The Education Ministry’s operational budget was left out due to its officials not appearing before both committees after receiving subsequent reminders to defend same and that there would be salary for employees.

The Ministry of Education Minister, George Werner, did not appear before the plenary of the House of Representatives to give reports of budget performance of fiscal year 2014-2015 and to unveil what is needed for fiscal year 2015-2016.

The draft Fiscal Budget for 2015-2016 that was submitted and read in the plenary of the House of Representatives was turned over to the joint committee on Ways, Means, Finance/ Development Planning and Public Accounts with a mandate to scrutinize and make recommendation to plenary.

The budget for fiscal period, beginning July 1, 2015 and ends June 30, 2016 is in the amount of L$ 52,083,190,700.00 same being US$ 622,743,420.00. It was subsequently approved by the plenary of the House of Representatives.

During the passage of the budget there were 40 Representatives in favor with Nimba County District # 5 Representative, Samuel G. Kogar and Montserrado County District # 8 Representative, Acarus Gary against with 3 abstentions.

The Budget is now expected to be sent to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.
