The Minister of Agriculture, Dr.Florence Chenoweth, has expressed as frustrating for the failure of the Liberia Government to disburse to the Ministry of Agriculture the 10% of its budget which is yet to be realized.
Speaking at the press conference over weekend in Monrovia, Minister Chenoweth explained that the government of Liberia has not supported agriculture and that since the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning made the public pronouncement of allotting US$35 millions to the Ministry of Agriculture, nothing has been done about it.
Minister Chenoweth explained further that the Ministry of Agriculture rents trucks to enable the Ministry take messages to farmers and noted that agriculture is difficult and is not something cheap so it needs logistical and financial supports.
According to Minister Chenoweth, the Ministry of Agriculture has put together distribution plans and that the Ministry’s determination is to ensure that effort be made for farmers in the southeastern region of Liberia have access to agricultural opportunities. She also lauded WAAPP, WBregional Team Leader for his visit to Liberia.
Also speaking at the press conference, WAAPP, WBRegional Team Leader ToureAbdoulaye said he spent few times in Bomi monitoring WAAPP projects and he was so much impressed with those projects. He said West Africa Productivity Program is a regional project that covers 13 ECOWAS countries. He then encouraged the Ministry of Agriculture to continue with its good work and strengthen the capacity of farmers in the country.
Meanwhile there is a need that Government of Liberia shoulders its responsibility and support the Agricultural sector to enhance reduce hunger in the country.
