Cyber Crimes On The Rise

By Garmonyou Wilson
An investigation conducted by this paper says that crimes committed on the internet to dupe people out of money are on the rise in Liberia.    Cybercrimes are criminal offenses committed via the Internet or otherwise aided by various forms of computer technology.
In the case of Liberia, their hopes of going abroad are finding them being deceived by these criminals, who use unsuspecting Liberian enthusiasm and deceive them into giving money for visas, passports or relationships.
Thousands of United States dollars every year have been estimated to fall into the hands of unscrupulous individuals who dupe others using Facebook, Twitter, Skype, etc.
Fanta Kamara was allegedly duped of over US$400 recently when she connected with a man via Facebook who wanted her to go to South Africa.
The white man from South Africa allegedly told Fanta to give money to a man in Liberia who was to help her process her papers to South Africa but Fanta later found out after spending over US$400 that the white man from South Africa was also the black man in Liberia.
