Finance Reacts To Kofi Woods…Says Audit Underway

The authorities of the Ministry of Finance say it has read with dismay, a quote in the Inquirer Newspaper Monday, July 7th edition attributed to former Public Works Minister Kofi Woods terming as “sinister motive in the making” the merger of the Ministries and Planning and Finance taking place without an audit.

The Ministry would like to state on the records, that it has since May 30, 2014 formally requested the General Auditing Commission to conduct a “financial and system audit” for the fiscal years 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 of both the defunct Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs.

In his letter, Minister Konneh explained that the audit was geared towards closing the financial books of both ministries, which as mandated by law will become the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) as mandated by law.

“If only Minister Woods had done some due diligence and taken the time to ascertain the facts relative to the transition, he would have known that both Ministries of Planning and Economic Affairs and Finance are in the process of being audited by the GAC,” the Minister stated.

“To date, all modalities have been completed and the entrance conference for the audit is set for Thursday, 10 July 2014.We see his latest comments as not only self-serving and politically motivated but intended to gain public attention at the expense of others,” he added.

“Being the longest serving member of cabinet in the Sirleaf administration and the most afraid of any kind of audit – always terming them as ‘witch-hunt’, Minister Woods lacks the moral authority to make such comments,” Min. Konneh averred.

“The Authorities of the Ministry of Finance want to re-assure the Liberian public that it remains a touch-bearer of transparency and accountability and will do everything to continue to enjoy the public trust and confidence,” the Minister assured.
