Kongba University Students Found Union
Citizens hailing from Kongba District, Gbarpolu County last week founded a student union name and style ‘KONGBA DISTRICT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS UNION’ in Brewerville, Montserrado County.
The meeting which was jam pack with citizens from the district residing in Monrovia and its environs met at the residence of Mr. Sam Zinnah Roberts in Brewerville, behind the GEDA AME Church to brainstorm on the formation of a student advocacy group to be the mouth-piece of the District (KONGBA).
According to the Interim Chairman of the group Mr. Sam Z. Roberts said that he saw the need for such group to be established for the advancement of the District. He said the idea was not a new one in Liberia as citizens from other counties in Liberia have done or are doing the same.
He further stated that this is a new beginning for the district; as the organization aim and objective is to positively engage the county leadership and national government for a fare share and equal distribution of state resources to the district and the de-centralization of leadership.
“The working of the group will also be to advocate against the ill treatment of political leaders against the district. We also going to resist any influence to any politician who will think that we will go back to the old order, no way”, he emphasized.
Some of the citizens who were spoken to also express delight about the formation of the new organization and said they will work tirelessly to ensure the betterment of their district in a very positive manner.
“We are going to educate our people back home on development in national government and the way forward for the improvement of the district through infrastructural development”, they narrated.
Chairman Roberts calls on the citizens hailing from the district to join the cause and urge them not to listen to detractors.
The group wants to begin with calling on the President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf to speedily settle the appointment of a District Commissioner to stir the affairs of the district. The Interim Chairman said that the appointment of a new commissioner for the district has been long overdue, therefore the President should see reason that a new commissioner is appointed for the forward match of the district.
Those who were elected to stir the affairs of the organization until election are Mr. Sam Z. Roberts-Interim Chairman, Mr. J. Zinnah Kanajawa Cueh, Vice Chairman, Mr. Abraham Lahai-Secretary General, Mr. Zinnah B. George-Financial Secretary and Mr. Sando B. George-Treasurer.
A Ways and Means Committee was also formed to acquire legal documents for the organization as a legal entity and design the by-laws and constitution. The committee members include Mr. Duke Johnson-Chairman, Mr. Edwin V. McGill-Vice Chairman and Learphey F. Bainda-Secretary. Others are Kenneth D. Lawson-member and Fennie Dennis-member.
Meanwhile, the organization will be meeting on the third Sunday of September 17, 2013 at the residence of Mr. Roberts.
