Mysterious Death At Internal Affairs
Jefferson D. Tweh
The Ministry of Internal Affairs on Capitol Hill was a scene of attraction early yesterday morning at about 11:00 a.m., after a 15-year old girl, Bendu Weah died mysteriously in the bathroom of the Ministry.
Eyewitnesses told the INQUIRER that Bendu who had gone to the Ministry with her grandmother, Theresa Weah to appear before a judge only identified as Judge Jallah, on a case involving witchcraft, asked for an excuse to use the bathroom. The eyewitnesses said 15 minutes later Bendu was discovered dead in the bathroom.
She was discovered dead by some officers and personnel from the forensic Department of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), and the Liberia National Police (LNP) as well as some medical doctors were seen on the scene but failed to give the cause of death up to press time.
Judge Jallah who was presiding over the case also fled the scene and refused to avail himself for questioning. A lady identified as Angie Nyan who claimed to be a sister of the deceased told a team of journalists that Bendu had confessed that she (Bendu) was a witch and that she was initiated by her grandmother, Theresa Weah.
Angie said, after her sister (Bendu) confessed in the Borough of New Kru Town that she was initiated by their grandmother, the accused (grandmother) got furious and took Bendu to the Kru Governor for investigation. Angie said, the Kru Governor pleaded with the family to return home and resolve the case but according to Angie, the grandmother insisted that she will not relent unless Bendu provided all evidence that links her (grandmother) to being a witch and so she (grandmother) forwarded the case to the Ministry of Internal Affairs for further investigation. Angie said Bendu and her grandmother first appeared before Judge Jallah last week and he (Judge Jallah) asked them to return to the Ministry on Tuesday (yesterday).
The grandmother who was also shocked by her granddaughter’s mysterious death maintained that she was not a witch and that her children had accused her falsely. She lamented that the allegation levied against her by her children and grandchildren had degraded her in the community. The accused grandmother said that she was ready to prove her innocence.
The accused grandmother said she wanted to clear her record because she is innocent and that she loves her grandchildren so much. She said she is embarrassed because she has been portrayed as a witch in the community.
Up to press time, there was no medical report released to establish the cause of Bendu’s death.
